В некоторых сферах производства жестко регламентирована чистота продуктового воздуха, особенно по содержанию компрессорного масла, от которого его наиболее сложно очистить. К таким отраслям промышленности относятся электроника, пищевая промышленность, фармацевтика и др.
Даже если по условиям производства допускается незначительное содержание масла в сжатом воздухе после нескольких степеней фильтрации воздуха маслосмазываемого аппарата, нельзя исключить аварийные выбросы компрессорного масла в пневмомагистраль с возможным загрязнением продукта производства. Во избежание подобных ситуаций разработаны безмасляные компрессоры, которые не используют масло в контакте со сжимаемым воздухом.
